A ranch house kitchen gets a total makeover

Outer wall of the kitchen: A small pantry was turned into a china cabinet (new pantry moved to inner wall), the two stoves replace by a wall oven and a single range with a hood now venting to the outside. The sink remained in the same location to avoid moving plumbing (see next photos).
New grey tile flooring installed, with epoxy grout.

Before and after of the window area. The original double-hung window was hard to reach and frequently stuck; it was removed, the space enlarged and a sliding window installed, allowing it to function as a pass-through to move platters to the patio outside (where a new shade pergola was also added). The wall was tiled in a herringbone pattern and sconces placed at each side of the stove, a glass pendant over the sink and 2 flush-mounts on the ceiling. The old double sink was replaced by a deeper single-bowl stainless steel with a pull-down kitchen faucet. A new dishwasher was installed (same location as before). For the countertop, the owner chose a blue veined stone, complementing the navy blue lower cabinets, painted in glossy laqueur (Admiral Blue, BM). Wall, ceiling and trim were painted in gloss Clean Moon (Behr). Upper cabinets were removed, and the space to the right of the window was turned into a coffee station, with a peg board to collect the family mugs, keeping them out of the way.

Inner wall. The pantry and refrigerator were moved to the front of the room, with additional storage on top. A black railing supports a ladder (not shown). A new swing door with glass connects to the dining room. A wider countertop with butcher block, two rows of upper cabinets separated by the ladder railing (painted Clear Moon in glossy laqueur), and a Rev-a-shelf heavy duty mixer lift fitted inside the lower cabinets, for easier access (the baker in the family was ecstatic about this feature!). The pantry was designed to maximize space, the inside kept unpainted (it was protected with several coats of Waterlox) to avoid scratches, and fitted with strip lights.

This project entailed redoing a galley kitchen to better meet the needs of growing children, one of whom is a baker. The limitations of the project --besides budget-- were lack of building materials post-pandemic, and the long dark space. The best challenge was to open the space to access the outdoors.
