Situated on Miami Beach’s iconic North Bay Road, Taylor Abess of Parlor Interiors has transformed a historic home into a harmonious blend of past and present. Once owned by Sarah Harrelson, founder of Cultured Magazine, this residence has been reimagined by Abess to embrace architectural history while incorporating modern comforts, becoming her personal family home.

The renovation is a profound journey that infuses the home with a sense of history and character. From the installation of an antique fireplace to the meticulous ceiling moldings and AC vents, every detail echoes the home’s 1940s origins.

“We wanted to pay tribute to the time it was constructed, and even though we did a full gut renovation, we were very respectful of the architectural details and stayed consistent with the design of the original structure,” says Taylor. “When people come and experience the house, there’s no indication that there was any addition. It looks like it all could have been built in the 1940s.”

The dining room underwent a dramatic transformation, introducing a legacy theme through art and lighting. Featuring a custom, handcrafted chandelier by renowned artist Michele Oka Doner, the space blends deep hues and intricate details to create a captivating dining experience.

The living room is a harmonious blend of custom moldings and paneled ceilings, restoring the home’s original 1940s architectural integrity. The expansion of the formal living room has created more space, centered the fireplace, and captured more light, reviving the room’s historical charm and creating a timeless, inviting space.

The home office has been transformed into a gentleman’s study with deeply thoughtful custom built-ins. Unique corbels, crafted from marine rope dyed in Japanese calligraphy ink, add an element of craftsmanship and personalization. This study honors the home's Miami Beach location and serves as a sanctuary for husband Matthew's literary passions.

This renovation exemplifies how thoughtful design can breathe new life into historic spaces. Each room tells a story of transformation, blending contemporary style with historical significance.
