A third floor co-op renovation in the historic West Village. Fully opening up a crowded, pre-existing layout to allow for double sided light exposure, 1000 BCE Architects' utilized minimal built-in furniture and a colorful, multipurpose shelf that spans the entire length of the apartment to both organize and unify the space. The kitchen being open to the living area in the re-designed layout, opening shelving became a crucial aspect of the design so as to not crowd the space with volumetric cabinets, and to allow the client to display his curated art and book collection - an approach that melds purposeful composition with function. The original ceiling beams were exposed and painted to add additional height and to nod to the historic character of the pre-war building.
