Camp Meisel is a house to be built on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. 1.5 hours from Philadelphia and 2 hours from Washington, D.C. the house has several goals, family and friend meeting place, an art studio, viewing the daily sunset over the water, and overall a place for respite.
Designed by David Meisel (BFA, University of Iowa's Sculpture Department) and with advice from his father award-winning Architect and AIA Almus Martin J. Meisel strived to create a structure that worked with the location, land, and future.
Camp Meisel is being built in Rock Hall, MD where the houses near the shore are impacted with a 4.5ft. 100-year flood plane. Ensuring a proper foundation for flooding, overall structural integrity, as well as a goal to keep as many trees on this beautiful lot, the Meisel's will build up vs. out.
The town of Rock Hall, MD has a zoning height of 30ft...but an exception was granted for Camp Meisel based on the elements we will showcase in the renderings below.
Keeping the building cost to $272 sq. ft. for the "interior" living space has included huge hurdles as the overall build includes- 1,100 sq. ft. of above-ground "basement", and over 1,500 of deck space.
Finding the right builder and overall team who are "excited" to build Camp Meisel is helping to ensure this design becomes a reality.
