Deck House Inc. was founded in the late 1950s to build custom-designed prefabricated homes, featuring signature elements such as open interiors that bring the outside in and dramatic, expansive spaces of wood and glass. It has a bit of a cult following replete with private Facebook group.

This mid-century modern property is an original Deck House Company design, and in fact served as the model home for its neighborhood when it was first built. It’s an early example of eco-friendly as well, built to be passive solar, and designed to let natural light flow in from every room. The home was love at first sight for current owners Chris and Rebecca van Bergen, founders of the non-profit Nest, which works with artisan businesses around the world toward the social and economic advancement of global artisans and homeworkers. For them, moving from Brooklyn to the suburbs was a big change, but they wanted a quiet, creative space where they could start their family. They were looking for a contemporary home that would enhance their simple aesthetic and the art collected from many clients overseas.
