Since the advent of the smartphone in 2008, 16 million people have joined the work-from-home workforce—a number that will only continue to rise with the millennial generation. In response to shifting societal values, how can we design residential spaces that better serve our evolving needs?
e-lofts has reimagined traditional residential life to suit today's growing mobile workforce by transforming suburban office buildings into lofts for apartments, workplaces or both. e-lofts targets acquisition of vacant office buildings that contain tall ceilings, big windows, open floor plans and traditional office parking for conversion into highly amenitized loft-style spaces that function equally for home or office use.
These hybrid residential-commercial spaces found their first home in Alexandria, Va., in August 2016, where a 1987 office building was transformed into 200 live-work units. Imagine stepping out of your apartment as someone arrives to work in the unit next door. As the lines between work, live and play continue to blur, e-lofts offers flexibility for the future.
e-lofts provides the ultimate work-from-home space, with access to both business and residential amenities. Lofts have huge windows, tall ceilings, plank floors and designer kitchens, as well as business-ready electrical and data service and fiber-optic backbone capability to ensure seamless functionality for business occupancy for up to 10 employees.
Lord Aeck Sargent was the architect on record for the project. The D.C. office of LAS collaborated with D.C.-based Gensler for interior design on the amenity spaces and half of the lobby level among other spaces, and LAS managed in-unit interiors.
