Nestled into the cliffs above the beautiful Trevaunance Cove, St Agnes, Gull Cottage has been overlooking the bay since the 17th Century. In 2018 our client approached us to extend and refurbish the Cornish beach house to provide further accommodation and to modernize the wind heated exterior.

This proximity to the coastal path and its visual impact from the beach, meant that the design of any new extension to the property would have to be carefully considered. Gull had previously been extended a number of times over the years, but the new addition was looking particularly tired and dated. The key approach to a property such is to respect its surroundings as well as its heritage; designing within the context of the surrounding coastal landscape so that it would sit seamlessly within the scenery.

It was important to distinguish between the old stone cottage and the new additions yet maintain a relationship between the ‘old’ and ‘new’ sides of the cottage. The introduction of a new vertical black timber cladding to the external facades of the new extension helped to update the external feel to the cottage.
