Fleetwood windows and doors are used throughout to provide curated moments looking out toward the northern pasture and ocean views – this home is about experiencing the site and its views.

Travertine tiles were selected by the client in the halls and entry space. Tile installers book-matched each tile and hand-tinted grout joints to encourage the tiles to read as one continuous surface.

The site offers views both north and south. Curating those views alongside the owners' art collection offered both a challenge and an opportunity for the architecture. How can a home look both inward and outward successfully?

Moments of interconnectivity were emphasized in both the floor plans and finishes. Mirroring indoor and outdoor stairs as well as envelope walls relates interior spaces back outward to reflective garden courtyards.

The custom steel stair fabricated by Bone Structure is offset from the travertine wall to diffuse light through it and encourage relaxation and reflection at the lower level. Under stair areas can often feel dark or oppressive - the open stair at the Haiku Home was designed to yield an almost-monastic effect.

Cedar plank ceilings were finished with a custom treatment developed by the homeowners. The ceilings offer warmth and texture while avoiding darkening or busying the spaces as wood ceilings often do.

Wood elements in the project: slats, millwork, engineered flooring, and ceilings were selected to offer varying wood tones unique to their application.

The primary bedroom has the most north-facing view, minimizing onlooking from the rest of the home while offering a panoramic ocean view perch. Its size was kept modest while South and East wall space was preserved for art and accent finishes.

Intersections between materials and planes were carefully coordinated with the build team to ensure each transition showcased the home's intentionality and attention to detail. The final result: materials appear to float into one another, details are understated yet impressive.

The Haiku House is designed to feature spectacular views, showcase a robust art collection, and provide a comfortable retirement lifestyle to its occupants. Early intentions were set to optimize for both north and south views: to the North are the property’s horse pasture, orchards, and ocean view beyond, while the South presented a distant peak view of Maui’s Haleakalā volcano.

As a visitor to the home, you’re greeted by a large pivot entry door, obscuring the dramatic ocean view beyond. The entry divides the home into two distinct wings, one for private use and the other for entertaining. In the few moments where the two wings connect, exterior courtyard gardens frame views between interior spaces and encourage reflection.
