If you are looking to improve your gun storage, there are a plethora of options available to you. Whilst, first and foremost, you should store your firearms in a safe, locked compartment, there are quite a number of ways of achieving this.

Today, I’ll take you through a number of things to think about when planning and making gun storage solutions, and then outline a few options for making your own.

Where Should You Store Your Guns?
Well, obviously, it’s up to you, but a lot of people don’t even think about this question. Upgrading your gun storage is a good opportunity to re-position your firearms in the place that they will be safest, and most useful.

It goes without saying that, especially if you have kids, you need to store your guns somewhere where it is impossible for them to get to them. Beyond this, however, you have a number of options. Whilst your cellar might be the safest place, during a robbery your guns are useless if you can’t get to them easily. For this reason, it might be worth spacing your guns around the house, and having one next to the door.

Get A Safe
This, of course, is the simplest option. Safes are not that expensive, and certainly keep your guns safe. However, they have a number of disadvantages.

First, they look ugly, and do not display your impressive collection of firearms very well. Second, they make your guns extremely difficult to get to if you find yourself in a dangerous situation. Third, of course, thieves will know exactly where your guns are, and may just decide to take the whole safe.

Use Your Furniture
So what are the other options? Many people use their existing furniture, adapting bookshelves, chests, even sofas and walls, to accommodate gun storage. The advantage of doing this is that well-made furniture is likely more solidly constructed than anything you can build yourself, and some will take only a small amount of work to convert into a great gun storage cabinet. This approach also means that you can hide your hunting rifles really well from thieves or assailants, because your weapons will be hidden in plain sight.

Build From Scratch
Of course, the true professionals build their own gun storage from scratch. This is actually easier than you think, as long as you have some basic woodworking skills, and definitely shows off your guns to their best advantage.

Whilst many “tactical”, off-the-shelf gun storage solutions make extensive use of high-tech metals and fastenings, I would recommend sticking to wood. It is much easier to work with, and will still provide more than enough security if built correctly. And since you can custom-make each cabinet, each gun will have a specially-designed space for itself.
