The project is located on a corner lot property, with the garage facing an alleyway, transformed into a modern and functional accessory dwelling unit (ADU) and creative office/guestroom. The ADU, repurposed from a 400-square-foot garage with a 600-square-foot addition, includes two bedrooms, a multi-purpose room, a full bathroom, and a powder room, designed primarily for rental purposes with parking accessibility from the alley. A separate 234-square-foot creative office is positioned in the rear yard, maintaining accessibility from the main house while preserving privacy.

The primary challenge was optimizing the layout of the two structures in the rear yard while maintaining distinct outdoor spaces and privacy for the main house.

The ADU features an angled design, maximizing space and natural light, and incorporating a central courtyard as a focal point. This courtyard acts as a buffer between public and private spaces, seamlessly integrating indoor and outdoor living while maintaining privacy through strategic orientation. The angled walls and open layout create a modern, fluid aesthetic, breaking from rigid traditional designs.

The creative office’s angled layout further enhances the visual and functional separation of spaces, and distinct sections within the property.

Architectural cohesion is achieved by aligning the ADU with the main house's gable roof, while the creative office's flat roof introduces subtle contrast for a contemporary touch. This combination of traditional and modern elements results in a cohesive, dynamic, and engaging design that blends functionality, privacy, and visual intrigue.
