2 - Level, 651 Square foot loft, located in the heart of San Diego's downtown neighborhood, Little Italy. Lusso Lofts, is a 31 unit complex designed and build by renowned local "starchitect," Jonathan Segal, one of the pioneers to start the revitalization of this area which was once known as the "Tuna Capitol of the World." Where more than 6,000 Italian families lived here and toiled to build San Diego into the center of the world's tuna industry in the 1920's. With the eventual decline of the tuna industry on the West Coast and the destruction of 35% of Little Italy due to the construction of Interstate-5 freeway; Little Italy suffered nearly thirty years of decline. Jonathan completed construction in 2001 as rentals and were converted to condos for purchase in 2008 which is where I begin my story. I loved unit 29's layout, with its high ceilings, its many windows (it's a corner unit) and the "nooks and crannies" which I could maximize into other uses and storage (for some reason, Jonathan didn't design any closets). This being my first (and only) home purchase that I could afford, at an ideal location (3 short blocks from the San Diego Bay / Embarcadero and 1 block away from the San Diego Trolley, Little Italy Station) I was about to embark on a journey to reimagined this space that would reflect myself and lifestyle. Being a project manager / designer for a boutique brand agency, loving the outdoors as well as the social activities San Diego has to offer, I was able to complete the redo in about 8 years, with its starts and stops, budget issues, letting the "space speak to me," having other priorities that life throws out to you, etc., you know, life. lol. Anyways, the photos below have before and after. In the "nooks and crannies" I created a guest lounge for friends to crash for the night as well as an office space above the bathroom. The bathroom renovation removal of the bathtub /shower combo and into just a shower stall encased in glass to create the illusion of more space. Very happy how everything turned out and been "done" with the place for over 2 years now!
