McGahren Residence

The house is situated on a 10 acre lot with massive rock outcroppings, steep slopes and one acre pond within the lot boundaries. Planning and zoning regulations confined the house footprint to a gently sloping area away from steep slopes and extensive wetlands. Views of the pond and rock outcroppings as well as sun angles determined room locations. Large expanses of floor to ceiling glass were used to maximize the views. The spine of the house is a long central hall connecting all the spaces. An outdoor stone patio was was carved out of the plan providing views from one room across the patio to other rooms. Total square footage was kept under 3000 s.f. Costs were kept to minimum utilizing store front aluminum extrusions for windows and doors. Moldings, when used were 5/4X2 painted. Landscaping was kept to a minimum. Stone walls were constructed from chipped rock taken from the foundation excavation. The 600 foot drive way is gravel.
