Designed by the renowned architect, Charles Goodman, with expanded primary bedroom ensuite, kitchen, and hidden pantry all with modern efficient upgrades.

Bedrooms: 6
Baths: 4

Year Built: 1959

Square Footage: 3,040

This Brookview model in sought-after Rock Creek Woods--the largest mid-century modern enclave in Montgomery County, Maryland, just north of Washington, DC--was renovated and then expanded to adhere to Goodman’s signature architectural features, natural color palette and timeless aesthetic. Innovative for its time with the use of materials and meticulous placement into the existing landscape, this home maintains Goodman’s original striking mid-century modern features: beautiful floor-to-ceiling windows, floating staircase visible through the all-glass entrance, and custom brick fireplaces. Natural light abounds throughout the second level as the wall of windows in the living room offer unencumbered views of the trees, flowers and seasonal foliage below.

The careful renovation, with a focus on energy efficiency, and seamless addition preserves the original intent of Goodman’s vision while adding many modern luxuries for today’s occupants. The original gallery kitchen has been reconfigured to triple the storage space and prep area, adding gourmet appliances and handsome ebony-finished contemporary cabinetry. A dining space off the kitchen can comfortably fit 14 people and features a full wall of built-in cabinets as well as a hidden pantry. The owner says it’s her favorite party trick, “I often forget that guests aren’t aware of the huge walk-in pantry through the cabinets and it surprises them when I literally walk through the wall!” Through the kitchen’s sliding glass doors is a serene Brazilian-hardwood clad screened-in porch cradled by the surrounding trees and lush landscaped backyard, perfect for relaxing and dining alfresco. The light-filled main bedroom has vaulted ceilings and sun tunnels, feature corner floor-to-ceiling windows, two huge walk-in closets, and a gorgeous bathroom with heated floors and a skylight.

The warm materials, a color palette that mimics Goodman’s selected natural finishes and elegant hardwood floors throughout make this welcoming home a comfortable retreat. Additional closets and storage solutions have been added throughout the home to meet modern storage needs. With an upgraded HVAC system, replaced double-pane windows, added attic insulation, and new clean-burning whole-house fireplace insert, this house is incredibly energy efficient. The front yard has been beautifully landscaped to take advantage of all four seasons, and the fully fenced-in spacious backyard has a custom-built shed with mature fruit trees including pear, persimmon, and fig, maples, and a large fenced-in vegetable garden. In 2004 Rock Creek Woods was listed on the National Register of Historical Places through the Maryland Historical Trust. A walk through Rock Creek Woods in spring offers breathtaking views of the signature cherry trees. During the height of their blossoming, cherry tree petals blanket the yards and the streets in pink.
