Quarry House is a Mid-Century Modern sanctuary perched atop a former granite quarry in the tranquil woodlands of Haddam, Connecticut. Designed by John Martin, a published Wesleyan architect, the home merges architectural precision with the rugged charm of its natural surroundings. With floor-to-ceiling windows, a wraparound deck, and carefully curated period furnishings, Quarry House creates a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.
After a two-year search for an unspoiled midcentury home within two hours of our Brooklyn residence, my wife and I fell in love with Quarry House. We wanted a weekend escape that preserved its original midcentury integrity, unlike many homes of the era that were updated in the 80s and 90s. Over the course of a year, we carefully sourced period-correct pieces and original artwork, including works by Joan Miró, Josef Albers, and Sol LeWitt. Furnishings from Eames and a Noguchi table complement the architectural aesthetic, honoring both the home’s history and design.
Quarry House has been styled as a personal retreat, a place we share with family and friends, and we’ve recently listed it on Airbnb to let others experience its charm. With its modern amenities and timeless mid-century style, Quarry House offers guests a serene escape that celebrates both architectural form and natural beauty.
