What began as a plan to update the kitchen and replace a back deck in a 1920s Craftsman bungalow in Seattle's Queen Anne neighborhood quickly evolved into a comprehensive remodel that nearly touched every part of the home. Undertaken by Dyna Builders, with architectural and interior design also by the Dyna team, the project evolved to better meet the family's needs, while also respecting the home's original character and neighborhood content.

Initially focused on modernizing the kitchen and expanding the deck to enhance indoor-outdoor flow, the project's scope grew. The existing stair was complicating the overall layout of the home, so the stair was relocated to a central location creating a much more cohesive kitchen layout with expanded openings and repositioned appliances. A new Fleetwood sliding door provided direct access to a much larger reimagined covered deck. Skylights and walnut beams introduce light and texture, complementing a clean, transitional palette of white and gray cabinetry, and dark oak flooring. The deck- now a versatile outdoor living space with a gas fireplace, built-in heaters, and dining and lounge areas- offers year-round space for family gatherings.

On the main floor, subtle architectural shifts enhance functionality and flow. A defined entryway replaces an awkward half wall, creating space for full-height built-ins and an upholstered bench. Slightly expanding the living room accommodates a modern furniture layout while retaining its cozy proportions. Updates to the dining room allow for built-ins and a bar with an antique glass backsplash, blending seamlessly with the home's Craftsman origins.

As the project progressed, the scope grew to include significant updates to the basement and main floor. The unfinished basement was transformed into a more functional living space with two bedrooms, a media room, and a home gym. The new stair configuration increased the basement usability, allowing for thoughtful additions like a wine closet beneath the stairs. Finishes such as wood ceiling panels in the media room provide acoustic benefits and design continuity.

The renovation extended to the exterior, with new siding, windows, and reconfigured gables preserving the bungalow's street-facing charm. Inside and out, the project prioritized functionality and livability while honoring the home's architectural roots. From bespoke features like a cologne vault to the careful attention to material and lighting details, the remodel strikes a delicate balance between modern updates and timeless character.
