Front (north) elevation. "Eyelid" dormer at interior dining translates to "eyelid" trellis. SPaces across the front are Kitchen, Dining, Living, entry and Master Bed. Upstairs are 3 kid bedrooms, open 2-story space and guest suite. One of three historic hillside cabins seen at top left. Top of inclined "hillivator" providing access to the cabins can be seen to the right of the cabin.
Greet Room at "eyelid" dormer showing how he curve is brought inside and translated into a series of less-curved ceiling beams as the shape moves toward the center of the house. Flattening of the curve was required by the fact that the upper floor system did not allow space for the curve to extend all the way back to the center of the house. Due to amount of open space, the lower floor of the house was framed with steel columns and beams and the steel was covered with 100 year "tobacco-barn oak" brought across the country from VIrginia. Qll structural elements on this level are faced ith oak.
Laundry/Pantry. My philosophy is that every successful "open" (uncluttered) kitchen design requires an adjacent enclosed pantry to allow for the inevitable collection and storage of clutter. This Pantry was augmented for use as the mudroom, seocndary baking area and Laundry. Famiy mmebers can enter the home via the back door, go directly into the Laundry/Pantry, and shed their clothes for efficient clean-up .
