Bungalow & Backyard Sanctuary features a transformed backyard designed by Yardzen in Seattle, Washington. Yardzen wanted to help the homeowners balance a historical cottage-style exterior with modern outdoor living aesthetics.
The 1926 bungalow features an expansive wooden pergola off the back of the home, with a century-old grapevine woven through its beams. Before, the yard had a haphazard design and elements like the privacy fence and pavers needed replacing. After working with Yardzen to design a space that better reflected their needs, the installed yard features a downsized central lawn with more space for an al fresco dining area tucked into the southern corner, a casual seating area at the back fence, and reimagined edible garden beds.
The new modern fence style features horizontal wood boards forming a solid barrier to 6’, above which float thinner parallel boards that act as a lattice for vines, which sprout periodically along the rear and side fence lines.
To amplify the modern feel, Yardzen used oversized concrete “steppers” were used for paths through each side yard, and as a stylish paving choice for the dining area. The lounge stuck with gravel for ground cover, offering a more rustic alternative to the comparatively sleek dining space.
To help unify the planting design and play off the mature Japanese maple anchoring the dining area, compact Japanese maples were planted in the southern side yard as well.
