The Silver Armadillo is a 1971 Airstream travel trailer renovated from a neglected empty shell into a cozy and bright home full of life. The project allowed designers Rose Ballard and Paul Suttles to design an eco-conscious and affordable first home close to the outdoor amenities they love.
The project included restoring and modifying the exterior shell, a full interior redesign and build-out, as well as upgrading all systems for improved on and off-grid capability. Design decisions balanced functionality, views, natural light, mechanical systems, and storage needs. Not only was saving the dilapidated shell an eco-friendly solution, all of the material and fixture choices considered long term durability and sustainability. 105 Year old reclaimed beams were milled into flooring, shelves and front counters, while salvaged shiplap was used as an accent wall finish.
Although the Airstream was renovated to still be road worthy, the use is as a full time residence near downtown Austin. Site improvements were also done to create an outdoor dining area, work and lounge space, and storage.
