From Punch Architecture

slotBOX started with an exploration of simple geometric rectilinear and box
forms in relationship to a tight site (based on the owner’s program) that

worked to give a form of intimacy with dynamic views of the neighboring

Red Rock Mountains and Las Vegas desert. The process led to a minimal

and refined desert contemporary industrial home for a couple that value

clean design, daylight, indoor/outdoor desert living, and durable materials.

Slots in the architectural mass create rich private courtyard views that allow

for dynamic natural light and air flow throughout the environment. The

double height volume entry space is accented by an outdoor open atrium

and interior skylight which frames a clean box section of the sky for different

views at morning, dusk, and night.

Simple shading methods are created throughout the home by roof overhangs
and steel trellis canopy features. These architectural details play a

functional and aesthetic role as they play with light and shadow elements

that contrast with the materiality of the home. The use of Earthen materials

(steel, CMU block, plaster, and charred wood) allows the home to

withstand the desert environment, while conveying a sense of grit and

character that will further develop through beautiful decay. The interiors of

the home bring in materials from the exterior palette, while utilizing clean

lines, classic materials, and a desert mid-century modern aesthetic. This

is achieved with warm woods (walnut and white oak) combined with hot

rolled steel cladding and burnished plaster walls contrasting the concrete

flooring and CMU feature walls.

The landscape and hardscape is highlighted by a minimal rectilinear water
feature in the central courtyard with a sculptural deadwood saguaro and

a massive native sierra gold boulder that reflects on the water. The soft

desert grasses, olives, and Indian figs contrast against the exterior palette

with lush colors and blooming flowers. The pool is simple with a dark

plaster finish that compliments the home and creates a dark lagoon that

shimmers in the day and night.
