The Dojang

The design process involved an ongoing dialogue that took close note of how the light moves across the space. Van and Newman envisioned a multitude of uses for the studio, which guided the design and the material choices. For instance, the walls are made of polycarbonate because it combines durability and affordability and, importantly, introduces natural light while blocking ultraviolet rays. The plywood floor, selected in part for how well it weathers, mirrors the ceiling of the same material and gives the space an earthy feel. Opening to an elevated steel deck, the studio features a retractable front and a sliding side door.
