Seven years ago the owners of this house were looking for a new home where they could live with their six children. They ran into a piece of land under the smoke of Amsterdam. The plot is located in a forest area, on a natural lake and also borders the former southern sea coast. The ideal spot until it turned out that the building permit was only granted if the house referred to the old gunpowder factory that once stood on this spot. After a long period of development, ‘The Factory House’, as they call the house, has become a wonderful place by the water. It has a real steel factory pipe, the canopy looks like an old loading dock, and where black powder used to be stored is now a barn made of black burned durable wood (Shou Sugi Ban).
Sustainability is in the core of The Factory House by the use of earth warmt, solar panels, triple glass and reuse of rainwater.
It was quite an undertaking, but now that it is finished, it has become an industrial and warm family home and more than worth the wait!
