The Louis Ulrich Home

The home was purchased in 1983 for it's downtown location overlooking Memory Grove, the city skyline, and the Salt Lake valley/ Wasatch Range. Originally a 1937 speculative builder's home in the International Style, the home was rebuilt in 1996 from the ground up in a complimentary modern style. Mature landscaping offers intimacy while at the same time framing the spectacular views. The bedroom level has the summer view as if from a tree house. Birds and squirrels frolic within feet of the windows. The upper roof decks offer views of the neighboring Capital Building along with panoramic views from the foothills to the east to the city center to the south. The home is a design collaboration of the owners as architects. The attention to details is spectacular, the tiles in the master bath, the open kitchen or just the commercial grade windows and door. The main level has a mix of formality and casualness for easy entertaining and flow. Magda would host parties for her university students to not only see the architecture, but to also see how an architect lived as a lifestyle. The terrace is an extension of the living room. The joint collaboration shows in the privacy wall for the main level terrace one wanted to frame the view while the other wanted the intimacy of the party. The slit of light coming between the home and the privacy wall became the sculptural answer. The upper bedrooms allow privacy from the main level with evening movies shared in the round television room. Light floods the upper levels, each having large rooftop patios. This home is a yin and yang of American strength and European sensibilities, a place connecting to the vast open sky and intimate interior spaces.
