Johnny Cash's Ojai Valley sanctuary is a piece of living country music history. This California ranch property was meticulously designed and built by the legendary Man in Black himself. Now, it's available to host a few fortunate Cash fans who can step into a restored time capsule dedicated to the iconic musician's life.
During this period of his life, Johnny was married to Vivian Cash and had four daughters. In 1960, he purchased the land and constructed his dream house, making every decision about its layout and placement. This famous house, located behind two security gates on a six-acre property between Ventura and Ojai, is surrounded by 100-year-old oak trees, cypress, and walnut trees that Johnny himself planted. Its most striking feature is the 360-degree view that stretches as far as the eye can see.
The estate encompasses 5,000 square feet and served as the singer's beloved escape sanctuary, high above the tiny town of Casitas Springs, just minutes away from Ojai and the hustle-bustle of life on the road. The house and stories about Johnny Cash have become folklore among the locals in Ojai, who proudly claim him as part of their town's rich history. A dedicated billboard honoring him stands at the entrance to Ojai.
Many of Johnny's ideas are still evident in the home, including the country-motif family room with its curved brick fireplace, exposed wood beams, and the glamorous gold glitter game room. You'll also find custom ranch-style wood cabinetry, the original wall-mounted turntable, and an intercom system. It's a combination of Mid-Century Western and Glam.
The home features two large primary suites. The "MAN IN BLACK Suite" offers stunning panoramic views from bay windows, a black sparkle ceiling, a drop-in black bathtub, and a black commode. The “VIVIAN Suite," is a Hollywood-style retreat adorned in layers of pink and a gold Velvet and glitter ceiling. On the opposite side of the house is the timelessly preserved wood-paneled music studio where Johnny wrote many of his greatest hits.
The outside of the ranch house boasts breathtaking 360-degree views, a pool, hot tub, Western Poolside Bar, and two BBQ areas, including the Legendary JC BBQ. This spot, tucked high away, offers captivating views of the entire valley below and was one of Johnny's favorite hangouts, where he enjoyed grilling and taught his daughters to target practice. This is a truly special and Iconic ranch with a rich Music history.
