From Able and Baker Cabinetry
Our Client's Eichler home needed a Kitchen overhaul, so she enlisted our help. We are Able + Baker, and we design + build contemporary and mid-century inspired cabinetry, from our Southern California woodworking studio. Our Client and her daughters have lived in this home for a number of years, and one of the most loved elements of their home is the the warm, golden glow created by the home's wood tones. They enjoy sitting outside at night, and enjoying the glow from afar, as visible through their classic Eichler wall of windows. When considering materials for their new cabinetry, our Client considered going a more contemporary route of crisp white cabinetry. However, she was hesitant to think of her home without that special glow, and ultimately decided to go with warm wood tones. So, we designed + built cabinetry to echo cabinetry original to her home, but with modern features such as smooth gliding soft-close sliding doors, waste / recycle pull-out, and floating shelves with built-in lighting. Sliding cabinet doors are common to Eichler homes. However, our client did not like the way that the original doors were tough to slide, and found that the bottom track became a "crumb catcher" constantly in need of a clean out. The sliding doors we built slide effortlessly, and without the bottom track, they are a well used, low maintenance aspect of her Kitchen. We carefully toned the new sequence-matched cabinet doors and wall panels to match paneling original to the home, providing a seamless transition from Original to New. In addition, the integrated pulls we created echo those original to Eichler cabinets. While many Eichler homeowners are modernizing their Kitchens with contemporary materials such as High Gloss or Supermatte, there is still a place for Homeowners choosing to preserve original characteristics of their home yet enjoy the benefits of new, modern cabinetry. In building her new cabinetry, we were happy to help our Client retain the look of her original Eichler cabinetry, yet with increased functionality and use of space — an approach to renovation we can truly appreciate.
