Perched above a tranquil lake in Manitoba's cottage country, the trapezoidal plan of white pine retreat leans into the view, yet maintains a modest presence through the Jack Pines when spied from the water. The skewed form optimizes views to lake, preserves a rare and beautiful White Pine, and gives access to a glacial remnant boulder, used as a perch for sketching, meditation and contemplation. The plan is clearly defined with an open, light filled "lake side" which contains the active spaces, including kitchen, dining, living and the large screened room. The "forest side" is more cozy, private and has a lower ceiling plane. This area contains the bedrooms, bathroom and service rooms.
