Yellow Brook Farm House

This timber framed dream house, designed by Timberpeg, is the centerpiece of a family compound. Set on over one hundred acres of farmland, it is a modern interpretation of the traditional farm house, except larger and with all the latest amenities. The scale of the house, nearly 6,000 square feet, is reduced by having the main part of the house shingled, while the informal entry, two car garage, formal dining room and great room are covered in cedar board and batten. The result is a house that looks as though it grew over time in the traditional big house, little house, backhouse, barn style.
But this is not a simple farmer’s home; the white pillared porches that wrap both the front and back of the building tie the structures together as well as providing sheltered access to the swimming pool in back. The plan is very straightforward, with a formal entry through a custom fir door leading into an entry with lavatory on the left and stairs on the right. The family room beyond opens up to the back, facing south, and has a stone fireplace which backs up to the master bedroom’s private fireplace on the west side.
The generous kitchen and breakfast area are on the east side. Another custom fir entry door for family use leads to a formal dining room and a timber framed cathedral great room beyond, wrapping around and protecting the pool. The dining room is very formal, with Queen Anne style furniture, while the kitchen is large enough for informal eating at the granite covered island or in the breakfast area near the pool.
The great room to the east features two structural Douglas fir hammer beam trusses and another massive stone fireplace as the central feature. A nice touch, especially for a house with so many windows and patio doors, are the interior shutters for privacy and sun protection.
Upstairs are two bedrooms for the owners’ children, running from the front to back of the building, each with its own full bath. There is a sitting area with television in the loft separating the two upstairs bedrooms, overlooking the family room, and more bedrooms over the two car garage. The central cupola, a theme repeated on the garage, provides additional overhead natural light.
Along with a combination barn and office, plus pool house, this main residence is part of a remarkable family compound, with land for horses, a swimming pool, and plenty of space to both work and play.
