Two San Francisco art and travel addicts overhauled a loft—and customized a pair of shipping containers—to accommodate their collection and reflect their passions. The shipping containers were stacked, joined with steel tubes, and lashed to reinforced floor joints to make them earthquake-safe.
Using prefabricated materials for the exterior allowed Koehler and his team to drastically reduce building time during the construction phase. Cross-laminated timber panels (CLT), laser cut in the factory and assembled at the site within two weeks, add structure and aesthetic interest to the top of the home.

Elements of traditional Mexican crafts were incorporated with furniture and decor created by renowned designers in Mexico, including: wool felt carpets by Dejate Querer; bathroom sinks by ceramist Perla Valtierra; room accessories by Lagos del Mundo; bed and sofa cushions by 1/8 Takamura; and glass lamps by Nouvel Studio. Of course, mob’s own carpentry shop custom designed the furniture in all the rooms.
