Although strikingly different from its traditional farmhouse exterior, the interiors reference the outer appearance with an exposed solid granite wall in the living room and exposed roof trusses with black plated junctions that recall the artisanal joinery and construction techniques found in traditional Japanese homes.
The almost-entirely tallowwood kitchen is custom. Muuto pendant lights, bar stools by Alvar Aalto for Artek, a Vola faucet, and a ceiling fan by Beacon Lighting finish the room.
The outdoor space includes a fire pit.
Architect Johan Sundberg looked to Japanese architects like Kengo Kuma for inspiration for the design of a holiday home in southern Sweden. "We call it the Katsura typology, but that's probably sacrilegious," he says. The eaves of the gently sloped hipped roof extend generously in all directions, turning the deck into a covered retreat that’s part veranda, part engawa, the Japanese version of a porch.

Whitewashed European oak flooring and a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore paint in Gray Owl (2137-60) softens this space allowing the natural California sunshine to take center stage.

Out of state clients called upon Yoko Oda Interior Design to create a vision for their new 2,000 square foot retirement home perched on the top of a golden hill in Walnut Creek.
