Architect Johan Sundberg looked to Japanese architects like Kengo Kuma for inspiration for the design of a holiday home in southern Sweden. "We call it the Katsura typology, but that's probably sacrilegious," he says. The eaves of the gently sloped hipped roof extend generously in all directions, turning the deck into a covered retreat that’s part veranda, part engawa, the Japanese version of a porch.

Where the New Buffalo Residence now stands on a wooded lot by the shores of Lake Michigan, there used to be a serpentine ranch house with perplexingly small windows, none of which pointed toward the water. The homeowners had used it as a vacation retreat for over 30 years before an expanding family—and guest list—led them to approach architecture firm Booth Hansen for a fresh design.

Trendy VS. Timeless Kitchen Backsplash Tiles

I’ve designed my fair share of kitchens over the years. This kitchen project is from this year and so far it's my personal favorite! Many asked me this question of timeless vs. trendy tiles....Honestly, I don't understand some trendy tiles right now....but I use my guiding design principles to decide what's good in the space. Out of state clients called upon Yoko Oda Interior Design to create a vision for their new 2,000 square foot retirement home perched on the top of a golden hill in Walnut Creek. This whole house renovation capitalizes on the 180 degree views of the golden hills. Now this quiet home accentuates open spaces for indoor and outdoor entertaining.

The design for R&A's house maximizes an endless view of Mount Diablo and surrounding hills. The Yoko Oda Interior Design team couldn’t wait to help our clients transform their Walnut Creek home to reflect their modern style – Suburban home meets city sleek. A family with a passion for entertaining, R & A tasked Yoko’s team with creating a welcoming space for family and friends (and their dog) in mind.
