Huangpu Riverside Luxurious Penthouse in Shanghai

Before arriving, we were expecting the place to be luxuriously decorated and of high class. But it turned out the decoration was not thoughtfully done and looked awkward against the backdrop of the spectacular Huangpu River. The division of rooms and the traffic flow also need rethinking.

Original Interior Finish

The owner is a 20ish female, whose parents will come over sometimes. She wants an overall higher quality of living conditions and level of comfort but to control the budget and avoid changing the interior finish. After rounds of discussions, minimizing the adjustments to the plans, we decided to refine and reintegrate the interior space by prefabricating.

Different from traditional entryways, a table is placed at the center to create a welcoming and harmonious feeling.

The intimacy between the two spaces was emphasized, providing a relaxing moment for families both in the parlor and dining area.

Instead of serving as a TV wall, the prefabrication becomes an area to display artworks.

2.2 The Transition of the Stairs

The original stairs were simple but boring. Such design fails to serve as the visual destination of the main areas.

Without changing the structure, even the treads, and risers, we use the same stone material decorating the sideways, making it more lively.

3. Master Bedroom and Living Room

The adjustment to the master bedroom door’s position allows the living room and the master bedroom more complete, and the movement makes more sense. The wall system of the living room visually echoes with the downstairs prefabrication and the bedroom wall system also responds to the open living room, as well as providing a warm and soft atmosphere.

For the main color of the prefabrications, we select birdseye wood veneer close to the original interior color tone but more textured. The prefabrications are supported by bronzed metal shelving, finishing the final interior hue.

Furnishings and Colors

After all the adjustments, the entire interior space appears to be plain.

This project is a penthouse in Shanghai near Huangpu river, which is very expensive. But requested by the client, we lowered the budget as possible as we could. We use prefabrication to change the function of spaces and the movement flow, which could be a useful strategy to apply to common residentials.

The assignment was to redesign a multi-million dollars’ worth of penthouse near the Huangpu River in Pudong, Shanghai.
