Steel pipe columns and wood beams were recycled from a 1960s church carport; the old-growth fir sliding screens, fence, and gate originate from a heavy timber warehouse in Pioneer Square; the aluminum-and-glass garage door is reclaimed from a downtown condo conversion; and the studio’s shelving and track lighting is courtesy of workstations from another downtown building.

The Deadstock Catherine Table Lamp from Castor is a stunning example of the possibilities of mixing materials. With its industrial cement panel exterior, these art studios in Denmark by MOS fully embrace minimalism's aesthetic. That's not to say the design isn't enriching: several porches and a large courtyard create plenty of room for play and socializing. Large windows and doors create connections to the outdoors as well.

Architect Christian Tonko played with a double metaphor when designing the Camera Lucida studio. The name of the cantileverd hillside space, Latin for "bright chamber," references the open window facing the valley below, as well as the skylight that bathes the workspace in natural light.
