Bell Labs (Holmdel, New Jersey: 1957) History: As Silicon Valley titans like Apple seek to create their own corporate superstructures, it’s instructive to look back at Bell Labs, not merely a birthplace of American ingenuity but also a masterclass in corporate construction by Eero Saarinen. The man behind “the Versailles of Industry,” (the GM Tech Center), Saarinen built this ahead-if-its-time tech incubator with interconnected skyways and a mirrored ball exterior, a 472-acre campus where an impressive number of scientific discoveries took place. Status: Shuttered in 2007, the campus is owned by Somerset Development, which is trying to figure out ways to redevelop the site. Plans that have been floated over the past few years include scenarios that replace this iconic office complex with upscale homes. What You Can Do: Late last fall, Somerset committed to a $100 restoration plan, promising to develop the largest vacant office building in the country with a preservationist mindset, conserving features like the architect’s conversation pits while turning it into a more elaborate live-work space with medial offices, a library, restaurants, offices, and cafes. The more planning you do and the fewer changes you make, the higher chance you have of staying within your budget. Take the time to figure out what the scope of the project is and get a sense of how much work is needed so that you can make educated decisions when presented with options.

Patent Ochsner, a household name in Switzerland, has been around since 1928. Their stainless steel bins are great for smaller spaces that don't generate a ton of trash, and the utilitarian industrial vibe of the classic bin is warmed up by an optional beech wood seat with felt cushion. Though most of the contenders on our approved trash can list are European, one of our all-time favorites is made right here in the US of A. Sure, you might picture, say, a plunger when you think of Rubbermaid, but the company's Silent Defenders line of commercial waste bins is almost perfect. Very roomy, a soft close (hence the name), a sturdy wrap-around foot pedal, and a fuss-free industrial silhouette. You can find most sizes and colors on Amazon, starting around $150.

BIRILLO WASTE BIN and of course, throw tissues in the bin and keep the sick zone tidy for easy clean up and sterilization when the worst of it has passed. We all have to get sick, the least we can do is surround ourselves with great design to ease the pain.

"This piece came out of a need for a bread bin which carried our aesthetic into the kitchen space," Pedersen says. "Kitchens have become increasingly smaller; we are aware that it's precious real estate, hence the more compact size and the added feature of the lid flipping over to become a recipe book stand."

Two of chef André Chiang’s restaurants have appeared on the annual World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. So it makes sense that at his new home in Taiwan, which he largely designed himself, the kitchen takes center stage. To outfit it, André worked with Vipp, the maker of everything from the black steel island and stainless-steel countertops to the faucets, cabinets, shelves, pendant light fixtures—even the tea kettle and trash bin.

For the second year in a row, experts in landscape design offered free consultations as part of “The Landscape Designer Is In” program.

The exhibition graphics employ a customized headline typeface developed by Project Projects. The painted floor graphic shows the shape of Roosevelt Island (in orange) and the extent of the pneumatic tube system (in white).

A demonstration pneumatic tube system ran throughout the exhibition, so visitors could better understand the technology.

The firm's work also includes exhibition and logo design. They handled both for the exhibition 'Fast Trash,' which spotlights the pneumatic trash disposal system used on Roosevelt Island since 1975.

With white-board walls, the BetaBox is set up to encourage creative thinking.

Frédéric Perigot designed this trash bin with "the body of an aircraft," "a lid like a Frisbee," and a lid that closes with the "feel of a sedan." Which fulfills most, if not all, of our ideal trash can requirements. It's not cheap, but it will last forever. The round Frisbee version is €298; the larger, rectangular Mobil version with two canisters on the interior is €598.

The Twin Touch is quite rugged, belying its pristine appearance. The steel body and lid defy rusting and chipping, which is a practical concern if you spend the majority of your time around refuse. The larger capacity and unique pop-up lid are pleasant back-saving additions.

Haptic Lab is a Brooklyn design studio that creates quilts, kites, and other textiles. The Deneb Kite is crafted from screen-printed kite fabric in Brooklyn, and is cut and assembled in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. The Deneb Kite features Haptic Lab’s signature ten-foot-long patchwork kite tail and includes kite twine and flying instructions.
