Timber battens were used on north-facing windows to prevent excessive heat in the summer. The exterior is clad in Scyon’s Linea weatherboard and covered in Dylux’s Western Myall paint. Beneath the upper floor, a little nook makes for the perfect covered carport and storage spot for surfboards.

The courtyard is sunken because of the existing grade. The Albezia shade tree was planted when the outdoor area was still scrap yard, an “act of hope and faith in the future,” says Wittman.

The cantilevered upper volume shades a deck on the ground floor.

Alongside the redwood shade screen, which keeps the house from overheating, Freeman and Feldmann grow vegetables in an 18-inch-wide garden but frequently bike to nearby eateries for the local Mexican cuisine.

In the foreground are Float beanbag chairs and poufs from Paola Lenti. Mamagreen sofas nestle near the house on the sun-dappled deck. A 9.5-foot-tall shade cloth curtain seals off the entire length of the house when the couple is away, keeping the heat out of the interior and preventing accidental bird suicides against the floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Pozner credits Borowski with the idea to use a roller shade, purchased at the Shade Store, to close off the sleeping loft. The simple intervention, neither sound- nor lightproof, is sufficient to demarcate one “room” from another.

Inside the condos, the Fords’ penchant for rescuing and renewing is evident, from the many refugee animals that contentedly lounge about the house, to the salvaged gym floors in the kitchen.

The family dog enjoys the shade provided by the corrugated-copper roof overhangs.

Emblematic of Egg Collective’s dedication to American-made furniture, the Tyler Table Lamp’s hand-blown glass shade is made in New York and the blackened white oak wooden base is made in the design collective’s Brooklyn studio.

The Workstead Floor Lamp is a handsome take on a timeless silhouette. Its linen shade can be adjusted between 52–72" above the floor and rests on an adjustable swivel joint.

On the sunset side of the Sunrise house, the home's west terrace is shaded by mango trees.

The original red oak flooring was refinished. Custom roller blinds shade the house.

Most of the fixed carpentry for this project was designed by AS/D and built by a contracted carpenter. Tzalam, the wood of choice, resists humidity and heat.

The Doo Wop Suspension Light, originally called the Navy Light, was first designed in the 1950s in collaboration with the Navy Buildings Department. The pendant was prevalent during this time period because of its practical functionality and distinctive look. Although this pendant light is a modern take on the classic, the Doo Wop Pendant uses the same production methods as the 1950s, including hand-spun shades that are completed with a fine rolled edge.

The Circa Floor Lamp was designed by the Pablo Studio to be a revolutionary yet familiar product—a product that lives on the border of a utilitarian lamp and a traditional shaded lamp. Circa is defined by its flat-panel LED disc that moves easily on its axis with significant range.
