We spotted the N by Naber Concept Kitchen at Maison & Objet in Paris, where we learned that Naber is a family-run German kitchen company founded in 1948. Influenced by both Benedictine monasteries and Japanese residences, award-winning British architect John Pawson created The Life House – a minimalist holiday rental home in Wales with a pure and uncluttered ambience that encourages a state of quietude and contemplation.

Husband-and-wife founders of Calico Wallpaper Rachel and Nick Cope show how easy it can be to put a personal, design-led touch on loft living—even when it’s a rental. When the Copes rented a Red Hook loft in an industrial 1860s warehouse, the couple turned their rental into a testing ground for their marbleized wallpaper business and installed wallpaper in each of their rooms. The custom pieces take inspiration from the loft’s immediate surroundings and characteristics—from the silver-and-gold marbled mural that complements the loft’s exposed structural beams to a color-gradient wallpaper in the primary bedroom that takes cues from the sunset seen from Red Hook.

Mounting traditional wallpaper and undertaking painting projects can be laborious affairs. Consider using self-adhesive coverings, like the Squares Squared wallpaper by Chasing Paper ($30 per four-by-two-foot panel) to swathe backsplashes, cabinets, and walls for a face-lift that will be easy to remove when your tastes change or you upgrade to a nicer pad.
