The architect chose glass to segment space because it takes up fewer centimeters than constructed walls, thus helping the room feel larger. Curtains can be drawn closed for privacy. The bed and side table are custom, while the pendant light is from Exclusive Lighting.

The office, which is a single-level separate unit, boasts Ikea desks and a signed work by Gilbert and George (friends of the couple).

The backyard is one of this home’s best features. With a lot that nearly equals the square footage of the home itself, there was plenty of room to play with landscaping.

Glass doors make for an easy transition from the deck to the kitchen, where a painting by Erin Rachel Hudak hangs behind a round Saarinen dining table.

A steel-framed, bi-fold door system by Skyrange Engineering separates the edge of the house from the outdoor area.

The view from the kitchen is as lively as it is light, taking in the dining area, tiny courtyard garden, and the separate office building backed by the jumble of old buildings to the rear. The rustic dining chairs are by Börge Mogensen from Karl Andersson & Söner.

The living space and bedrooms are separated by two small courtyards. Linda Taalman reclines in a small, inflatable wading pool in the home's "firecourt," facing south toward the desert.

The sliding pantry cabinet doubles as a room divider when fully extended, separating the kitchen from the bedrooms.

After seven minutes, the length of time it takes to produce the proper amount of char, the boards are separated.

The glass walls that separate the living area from the courtyard fully retract to allow a smooth passage between the two.

A terrace covered by a pergola runs past the private volume (which contains three bedrooms of equal size and a bathroom on the ground floor) to the covered patio, and down the stairs to the pool.

"We really love to cook and much of our home life revolves around our kitchen. When we have friends over it’s great to buzz around here; it’s almost like a cooking show. We’re a very equal couple. We wanted the kitchen island to be a single form that we could both use. We can both cook and we can both wash the dishes. The whole thing is really easy to clean as it’s just one main surface that you can wipe down. So the preparation surfaces, the hob [cooktop], and the sink are accessible from both sides. It’s a simple, fun, form-follows-function principle: Store, wash, prepare, cook, eat."

Half of the terrain is left "empty", a longitudinal half void that varies in height, establishing an almost equal condition between covered space and open-air space.
