The native plantings in the courtyard, which is enclosed by a wall for privacy in the suburban setting, visually link it to the established eucalyptus trees at the front and rear of the property. The home’s dark cladding is accented by rose gold stainless steel panels.

The team also created a kitchen island with a gray lapatro-finish granite top and a rose gold stainless steel base. The vase is from Domo.

With the new doors and cleared exterior area, the guest house connects better to the main backyard area and pool.

The fourth set of glass doors leads to the private patio with a soaking tub under the sky.

A Roman Clay covered accent wall behind the bed maintains the understated texture Rossi instilled throughout the home, and the new salvaged doors open to the front patio.

The kitchen now has much more counter space, thanks to the new layout, with a quartz slab Rossi found on “super sale.” The pantry doors are repurposed, and the backsplash is a terracotta tile that the designer has had in storage since 2017.

With another set of doors on the opposite kitchen side, there’s more fluidity between the interior and exterior on all sides of the building.

The guest bedroom is heavenly thanks to a custom, low platform bed, custom linen curtains, Watt & Veke pendant lights, and side tables from Wisteria.

Husband-and-wife team Elaine and Stanley Yang of real estate and development firm Mini Inno discovered this 2,000-square-foot ranch home, and set about transforming it into an idyllic weekend retreat. Built in 1966, the home sits on 3.6 acres and, while the bones were good, it was a bit outdated in terms of style. The revitalized, Moroccan-inspired retreat is a sanctuary worthy of its soothing surroundings.

When the couple purchased the home, there was no landscaping besides some local shrubs and Joshua trees. They decided to give the backyard a calming vibe with a saltwater hot tub. "It’s an invigorating experience, showering and soaking under an open sky so close to nature," she says. The saltwater uses fewer chemicals than chlorine, and helps relieve swelling and aching joints for hikers.

The couple added a coat of black paint and cedar siding to give the home a cleaner, more modern look. "The house already had wide and low eaves, providing protection from the sun, and we added new spray-foam insulation, so the black exterior actually does not pose too much of an issue with the desert heat," she says. A new Cor-Ten steel fence blocks the view of the neighbor's roof, but doesn't interfere with the landscape.

The dark cedar wood countertops and a rose gold faucet in this kitchen meld together to craft a cozy and industrial feel.

“The main bathroom vanities were made with reused tepa and ulmo wood,” Chrismar says.

In the guesthouse, now used primarily as an office and art studio, a Womb chair covered in Myung Jin mohair is the perfect perch for enjoying views of the Seattle skyline and the local wildlife—from eagles flying overhead to seals swimming by. The accent table is by Martha Sturdy and the hemp rug is from Rug Art. Underneath is the existing concrete floor with exposed aggregate. The Hanko chairs are by Chadhaus and the Mortise table is by Sawkille.

Designed in the early 1950s by architect Roscoe Hemenway for the inventor of the famous View–Master toy, this ranch house was reimagined by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson for enhanced views, light, and indoor/outdoor connection.

Embedded in the desert, this Marmol Radziner–designed prefab home for a Las Vegas casino executive features a James Turrell pyramidal Skyspace structure.

Enormous windows allow light to flood the interior, while carefully framed views of the garden blur the boundaries between interior and exterior. The deep concrete bathtub in the downstairs bathroom, for example, offers views of both internal and external gardens.

Not far from Casablanca’s city center, architect Mehdi Berrada built this skylight-crowned, cube-shaped dwelling of concrete blocks for his family. Windows covered with strips of rusted steel keep the interiors, and their gray cement-covered walls, hidden from the street. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors open onto a tucked-away garden and lap pool. Charred oak, a board-formed concrete stairwell painted black, and a burned spruce ceiling calling to mind shou sugi ban are all warm, minimalist contrasts to the bright tiles that make frequent appearances in Moroccan homes.

Mehdi planted fig trees along the south facade, not only for the fruit, but because their broad leaves block the sun in summer and fall off in winter, letting sunlight pass.

An expanse of floor-to-ceiling glass sliders opens to the garden and a lap pool.

The walls of the stairwell are made of board-formed concrete painted black. “Everything in the house is experimental,” Mehdi says of the atypical dwelling, “the materials, the layout, the garden, the exterior.”
