WAVE CANDLESTICK The Wave Candlestick combines traditional craft production with a contemporary design sensibility. Hand-turned by artisans in Jaipur, India and designed by Michael Dreeben for AKMD, the Wave Candlestick mimics the undulating curves of sine waves. Each candlestick is made from repurposed, sustainably—harvested Mango wood -a native tree to India— and is burned and oil finished.

BLOSSOM CANDLESTICKS Part of the Blossom series, the Lily Candlestick is the baby in this family of blooms, standing at 24.5 cm. This joyous and organic form is crafted from hand turned beech wood— a production process inspired by the mid-century candlesticks which were made from the scraps of wooden furniture. Created by Danish designer Anders Nørgaard, the Lily Candlestick looks lovely as a single bud, but best when paired with others of the Blossom series to form a meadow in full bloom. Made in Sweden.

NICK AND THE CANDLESTICK Drawing its inspiration from antique weights and a Sylvia Plath poem of the same name, the Nick And The Candlestick candle holder is romantic and evocative. Designed by Lindsey Adelman, nine ethereal brass cylinders stand on a walnut tray, each one a different height. Candles appear almost as if they are growing out of them, and when lit the flames appear to dance in the high gloss brass finish. These look gorgeous sitting together on their tray or scattered throughout a room.

A bedroom occupies the top of each tower; a ladder leads to a sleeping nook and an east-facing window seat in the Sunrise suite.

Bernhardt Design traveled to El Salvador to present The Carrot Concept, works from a design collective in El Salvador. Their products from a variety of designers all use bright color.

The designers clad all interior walls with thin strips of pine and built all the furnishings. In the bedroom, hinged panels on either side of the mattress provide hidden storage.

As rich as the tech landscape is today, CES has always been about the innovation that lies ahead, just outside our grasp. That's why Whirlpool set up a high-concept vision for the connected kitchen of tomorrow, including a scanner that swipes groceries and displays their health information on a backsplash, and an in-sink dishwasher for small loads. While Whirlpool has no plans to bring these appliances to market yet, their day might not be far off: the prototypes at CES were all working.

MNML sought out to create an all-season ride that exemplified the idea of rugged refinement, as Watson put it, reflecting the studio’s usual philosophy of reduction and purity. The team tackled the problem by doing exhaustive field research and then building a story—a day in the life of a cyclist that would serve as the litmus test for whether the final design really works. Designed by Ariane van Dievot, the Avandi Candlestix Candle Holder Set is a series of three sleek candlestick holders. Crafted in solid brass, each candle holder has a decidedly modern shape, and includes a pointed top for both securing a candlestick and stacking other holders in the series. The Cog Candleholder series from Tom Dixon blends elegance and industrial inspiration. Each statuesque holder is made out of machined raw aluminum on a traditional lathe that is brass plated and finished with a clear lacquer. Without candles, the candleholders have a tremendous presence; with candles, the holders are defined by their substantial height.

15th Anniversary: Crystal Fulcrum candlesticks in Clear by Lee Broom, $450 each

In the rendering for the zeroHouse, the building appears to be both a harmonious addition to the landscape and a harbinger of future architectural forms.

The concept, called Vooking, was developed for the growing market of vegetarians, vegans and “flexitarians” (otherwise known as part-time vegetarians) in mind. Comprised of seven units divided into “passive” and “active” cooking zones, the concept kitchen contains a mixture of intriguing components, from a custom spice and built-in mortar/pestle station to an integrated sprout garden. Backed by big-name corporations like Gaggenau, Franke, and Dornbracht, the design team hopes to influence both the meat-eschewing consumer and the kitchen industry at large. GE Micro Kitchen Concept GE’s new product line aims to give urban and small space dwellers more suitable and ergonomic appliances, all contained within a single, “monoblock” structure. Image by GE

This stunning concept, a bid to design a future-forward skyscraper for Stockholm, appears like a kind of living building, with the terraced, diamond-shaped facade that acts like a multi-story trellis. Berg | C.F. Møller Architects conceived of this 34-story structure as a beacon, and its airy form and clean finish certainly would stand as a shining example of the Scandinavian aesthetic.

The +POOL concept aims to bring a giant floating pool to the East River of Manhattan. It will filter up to a half million gallons of river water each day, and serve as a public amenity.

“I read a story about a student in a small one-bedroom apartment who because she could only fit her big bed and her desk in the apartment, was too ashamed to invite her friends or her parents over,” remembers Van Bo about his inspiration for this crafty ensemble of furniture. “There was nowhere to cook, nowhere to sit, not even space for standard chairs to fit. It made me think ‘Where do we find the instruction manual for how to use a small space?’ We buy a new computer or a new vacuum cleaner and we are given instructions. But nobody teaches us how to use space”. So he designed plans for a small one-bedroom apartment that included a room-dividing piece (the Siwo Couch) that functions as an all-in-one couch, pull-out king size bed and bench that seats six to nine people, a miraculously problem-solving invention, along with custom-sized smaller chairs that double as tables. “Design is a social issue,” says Van Bo, “it facilitates or negates social interaction depending on its cleverness, use and beauty. Wohnung makes socializing possible and enjoyable in a small space, on a small budget”.

Born in Rome in 1914, Lina Bo Bardi emigrated to Brazil in 1946.

Vriesendorp also crafted a series of paper hands, a reference to Bo Bardi's habit of drawing attention to important details in her notes.
