To maximize space in this tiny 323-square-foot studio Budapest apartment, local design studio POSITION Collective used an elevated, plywood sleeping unit inspired by Japanese “tansu” mobile cabinetry, with secrete storage modules on the side of the steps leading up to the futon bed.

The interiors are dressed with an eclectic collection of furnishings sourced from around the world, from a Piauí handcrafted hammock and Indigenous Guarani handicrafts to a modern Tok&Stock chair and a Japanese futon from UK-based Futon Company.

The second floor bedroom is surrounded by clay walls. A tatami and futon provide sleeping quarters for two people; a mattress is available, too.

The open-plan living area on the first floor includes a futon sofa that folds out into a double bed. A family trunk was repurposed into the coffee table.

On the upper level is a bathroom, a bedroom with western-style beds and a dressing area, and a second bedroom with tatami floors and Japanese-style futon beds.

Located just off the kitchen, this room was originally designed for dining—the adjustable Ligne Roset Crescendo coffee table can be raised to 28.75 inches—but most days Bill and Abbie prefer to eat outside or at their casual Caesarstone-topped kitchen island. Today the space serves as a sunny reading spot and guest room, with a convertible futon (from Ligne Roset, since discontinued) and a set of leather-and-steel Paulistano armchairs from Design Within Reach.

Cookie has her very own futon to sit on, which she likes placed so she can view all entrances and exits to the house. As long as she can keep an eye on the goings-on of the household, she's content. The house is a worker's cottage dating from the mid-1880s. It has recently been renovated, retaining the original facade but adding a contemporary extension at the rear. Brisbane architects Cavill made the adjustments.

A Better Homes and Gardens Porter Fabric Tufted Futon from Walmart is a smart, small-space furniture option.

The picture window was the key design element. We fold out our futons and fall asleep to a wonderful view.

The daybed uses a Japanese futon mattress. The smaller piece of the sectional daybed is on sliders and able to function as a coffee table, or as seating that opposes the daybed for dining with a folding table in between.

Debuting at the show were Karup's Nido and the slightly larger Nest chairs. These semi-circular futons lay flat on the floor, offering a space on which to sprawl, or fold into a ground-level chair.

“We don’t hang many things on the walls because we like the texture of the wood so much,” explains Filipe
