While there are some windows facing the street, the majority of the light comes through the more exposed side of the house. The exterior is clad in Hardie Board siding and features Ridley windows. The structure has zero setback from three of its four property lines, a potential fire hazard according to the building department. In order to build as close to the edges as possible, the team had to introduce a commercial sprinkler system to ensure that flames could be contained.

The exterior is durable and low-maintenance thanks to its HardiePanel siding and metal-clad windows; most of the home's stairs (such as the entrance steps seen here) are short and can be easily ramped for future wheelchair access.

Cement panels painted a plum hue clad Jason Gordon’s 1,157-square-foot cabin in the Ozark Mountains. Architect German Brun and partner Lizmarie Esparza originally specified wood, but opted for the much less expensive material from James Hardie after contractor Damian Fitzpatrick recommended it. “It was an exercise in cost engineering,” Brun says.

Built on-site, it connects the house with two other Blu Homes prefab designs: an Origin studio, containing the gym/office, and a W-Series garage. James Hardie Reveal siding in Iron Gray distinguishes it from the factory-built modules, which are clad in Western red cedar.

At the garage, “the material is the same cladding as the addition and the back of the house— Hardie Boards were applied in a totally random pattern, with the intent to paint the surface,” says Radutny. “When it was done, I was pleasantly surprised with the accidental outcome and suggested for it to be left as is. The result was rather beautiful, echoing a sense of movement as the foreground to the Elevated Train above. So, they left it, as another art wall.”

The couple finished the exterior siding with shingles made of Hardie board and painted a deep purple. "We wanted an exterior cladding that was durable, low-maintenance, and relatively DIY-friendly," says Michael. "When looking at our options at the local hardware store, the fish-scale shape popped because it was unique, quirky, and not super serious—and yet could create a contemporary look through uniformly using it with woven corners and minimal detailing."
