In 2010, Ike Udechuku and Kathryn Smith moved into a neoclassical house in the Saint-Gilles district and set out to create what Udechuku calls “a gallery of the living experience.” Several times a year, they partner with European galleries in presenting rare and choice furniture, objects, and art in their home. They live with the items they borrow—eating breakfast at a one-of-a-kind Danish dining table, sipping wine on an iconic sofa—and welcome collectors and visitors into their home to experience (and purchase) design icons in situ. “These pieces are intended by their makers to be used, not to be in a museum,” says Udechuku.

Oubrerie was moved by the predicament of urbanity and domesticity, in an arguably neoclassical and self-proclaimed lineage, from fifteenth century Italian humanist Leon Battista Alberti to 1960s Dutch Structuralist Aldo Van Eyck, and he addressed the notion of the city in this house. Whereas Oubrerie obeys the rules of human-centered proportions, in typical Modernist irreverence, he defies expectations, taking every opportunity to call attention to breaks in geometric patterning.

Behind this neoclassical facade in Brussels is one of the most stunning interiors we've seen. It's the home of two passionate collectors who change out all their furniture and art every few months and open their house to the public as a gallery. As we put it in the story: "In this Brussels mansion, nothing has a price tag, but almost everything is for sale."

The East Wing of National Gallery of Art sits adjacent to the museum's original neoclassical home, and both contrasts and compliments the original gallery. Built to house the National Gallery of Art's Modern Art collection, the structure is composed of triangular shapes—with corners of the stone-clad main building rising high to produce an abstract turret-like effect. A triangular paneled glass roof covers the central atrium that connects the two buildings.

Architect Ulrich Hamann of the London-based firm Foster & Partners created a seamless addition to the 19th century Neo-Classical building that was home and studio of artist Franz von Lenbach.
