After an award-winning renovation by local practice Seibert Architects, the 1959 dwelling originally designed by architect Ralph Twitchell is up for grabs in Sarasota, Florida.

Most of the year, the family keep the sliding glass doors—which span 16 feet from the living room to the exterior deck—of their Tampa dwelling open, giving it the aura of a Sarasota Modern home. Stunning cantilevered overhangs, in the spirit of Paul Rudolph's Umbrella House, help tame the sun.

Brightened by light from the backyard, the built-in credenzas and kitchen cabinetry are by JKK Woodcraft. A Kartell FL/Y pendant lamp bridges the glass and wood details.

Florida couple John Pirman and Steve Tetreault built a new house inspired by the Sarasota School. Today’s FEMA codes required a plinth to lift the house five-and-a-half feet above grade and a roof that can withstand hurricane wind loads, making it a challenge to re-create the lightness of midcentury design, Pirman says.

The 2020 Sarasota MOD Weekend's Lido Shores Self-Guided Walking Tour featured the Putterman Residence. MOD Squad volunteer docents answered questions about the modern architecture and history. The Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF) presented the 7th annual Sarasota MOD Weekend Architecture Festival and honored the legacy of architect Carl Abbott. The weekend featured walking, kayak and self-driving tours of Abbott's houses, virtual videos and interviews, as well as the 'Carl Abbott Sculptor: Found Forms' exhibition at the Art Center Sarasota and a Retrospective of Abbott's design work at the Sarasota Art Museum.
