Today’s FEMA codes required a plinth to lift the house five-and-a-half feet above grade and a roof that can withstand hurricane wind loads, making it a challenge to re-create the lightness of midcentury design, Pirman says.

The Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF) presented the 7th annual Sarasota MOD Weekend Architecture Festival and honored the legacy of architect Carl Abbott. The weekend featured walking, kayak and self-driving tours of Abbott's houses, virtual videos and interviews, as well as the 'Carl Abbott Sculptor: Found Forms' exhibition at the Art Center Sarasota and a Retrospective of Abbott's design work at the Sarasota Art Museum.
