Outside, a gridded trellis with sheet-punched panels overlays the structure and extends into the landscape, providing shade in the warm desert climate.

The Babat residence in Nashville is blessed with a big backyard; however, the blistering Tennessee sun once made it feel more like a broiler than a place to kick back and relax. Enter architect Michael Goorevich—then on staff at Manuel Zeitlin Architects—who devised a wood-and-steel trellis to cover part of the space.

The home’s facade is private and mysterious, without discernable windows or openings. The exterior is made of concrete tiles, black plaster, and wooden trellises. The trellises act as a light screen, allowing only cracks of light to penetrate the exterior. The entry is camouflaged in the plane of the trellises, which adds to the opaque and impenetrable aesthetic at the front facade.

The house incorporates a variety of wood finishes, all in the same general color palette: unfinished ipe for the pool terrace, Douglas fir for the trellis and windows, and stained cypress for the siding mixed in with the exterior’s original redwood.

Much of the home’s design is based around a large, structural steel trellis supported by the second floor balcony. The top of the trellis is formed by frameless solar panels that provide the family with the majority of their daily energy needs.

Tack Architects designed the house to frame views of the surrounding landscape. The trellis offers shading and controls the amount of daylight that shines inside (and creates a dramatic passage along the house's perimeter).

Shaded by the surrounding trees, and featuring a trellised overhang, the structure limits its auxiliary energy needs. A tight building seal also helps keep the interior climate cool.

A second green roof is planted with sedum and plays host to one of the family’s favorite spots: a hammock. Bentheim suggested adding a trellis overhead to soften and balance the appearance of the facade.

Clad in warm larch wood, the dwelling features a canopy that serves as a trellis for plants and provides shade for the house to reduce cooling loads. The six foot long solar clothes dryer, laid on its side, camouflages as a comfortable bench.

Galvanized sheetmetal chimney cladding, a steel trellis and steel railings bring modern details and materials to the exterior. The steel trellis acts as a "drag strut and anchor" for the whole house, providing necessary seismic reinforcement while minimizing invasive changes to the older shell.

Together, the louvered sections of fence and the trellised roof overhangs paint the breezeway with shadows.

The trellis—made of a solid steel base and aluminum rods—modulates the daylight streaming into the house. The height matches that of the apple trees out front. "The trellis and plinth bridge the gap between house and garden," says Mazor.
