By replacing asphalt, the new playground manages nearly half a million gallons of stormwater annually, improving the health of local waterways. At various public school sites in New York City, green infrastructure components proposed by The Trust for Public Land have included small green roofs on storage sheds, rain gardens, rain catchment systems, and artificial turf fields with a gravel base that allow stormwater to pass through and be absorbed into the ground. With such improvements, green infrastructure components can capture at least the first inch of stormwater that falls on the playgrounds each time it rains.

The asphalt at this school playground in Brooklyn caused stormwater to drain into the Gowanus Canal, putting pressure on the city's sewer system, and adding contaminated runoff to an already polluted waterway. It also made a drab addition to the cityscape.

“I believe that whenever you’re hiring an artist, and Funn is an artist, he’s going to do his best work if he’s trusted,” says Kartheiser.

The result of the project is an artfully arranged house that looks out on open fields (protected by a land trust) and the rolling landscape beyond. “The only downside is that the area is farmed, so we get manure smells,” Doug jokes.

"A lot of people were skeptical about the idea, even though it wasn't the first time I pulled off something crazy," Cadena says. "I just trusted my intuition and the philosophy of the chef."

Before the $17,000,000 restoration, the property had been severely deteriorated with crumbling walls and foundations, and had been named under the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s 2005 list for America’s 11 Most Endangered Places.

A vacant lot in Queens, New York, is now owned by a community land trust established by neighbors.

Resident Peter Østergaard (with Maja, 6, and Carl, 20 months) and architect and photographer Jonas Bjerre-Poulsen have been best friends since they were 13, which makes for easy collaboration. Says Bjerre-Poulsen: “There are always a lot of challenges in a renovation, but Peter and Åsa trusted my judgment and gave me a completely free hand. Usually it’s hard to push people into unconventional solutions, but Peter has all these wild and crazy ideas.” One such idea was to embed a transparent glass-and-iron door in the floor, operated by a hydraulic pump, which allows access to the subterranean wine cellar. At night, the lit-up cellar glows, lending the compact living room an increased sense of verticality.

The Me-sa coffee table is constructed from American white oak and Richlite, a durable and eco-friendly material made from post-consumer recycled paper. "Our customers trusting us to make a table where they will share so many memories over the years is a huge honor," says Summers.

Above the kitchen extension, Rivera installed a peaked roof and, as part of the new design, placed a triangular window that follows the roofline. “I remember looking at that little triangle, which was quite expensive, and thinking, is it really necessary?” says Andrew. “But Helena said, ‘Just trust me, you should do this.’ And of course, it looks so much better this way than it would have without it.”

Trust the Danish to design a minimalist speaker upholstered in Kvadrat fabric.

To counteract this, we introduced our clients to a German window manufacturer who is a trusted supplier that has provided a top-quality product for several of our other projects. This supplier custom built triple glazed tilt and turn joinery that was also made from Larch for an overall cohesive look.
