1. Timber-Framed Hobby Barn

Builder: OakBridge Timber Framing, Location: Indian Hill, Ohio

From the builder: “This custom timber-framed barn has quite a few surprises inside—it’s designed specifically to house a wood shop and party barn, as well as a space for beekeeping materials and a root cellar. It’s ideal for entertaining—and the beautiful craftsmanship inspires beautiful hobby woodworking.”

2. Modern Barn

Architect: HMHAI, Location: Greenwood Village, Colorado

From the architect: “Originally built to house a garage, workshop, and wood storage, this classic barn has been gently reimagined into a unique guesthouse with a rustic accents and modern comforts. HMHAI sought to preserve and accentuate the barn’s features as much as possible, and the result is a warm and cozy, energy-efficient guest house. The programming included two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining area, a farmhouse kitchen and pantry, a living room and a laundry room.”

3. The Resonant Dwelling

Architect: Schemata Studio, Location: Whitsett, North Carolina

From the architect: “One of several works by the Greensboro, North Carolina–based architecture firm SCHEMATA|studio, the Resonant Dwelling is an adaptation of an old tin-clad, solid oak barn into a live/work studio for the firm’s owner. The novelty of the existing gambrel structure lent great opportunities and challenges to the process of conversion. The architect focused on utilizing the logic of the old barn’s layout to inform ways to best craft the new intervention. Some spaces were left largely intact, with exposed rafters and studs, while others were grafted onto with contemporary details including steel beams and crisp wall corners. The exterior siding is a combination of the original tin-panels, oak plank, and a modern charred wood slat treatment. The mixture of textures creates a rich articulation of old and new.”

4. Meadow View

Architect: Atmosphere Design Build, Location: Rough and Ready, California

From the architect: “Designed by Atmosphere Design Build architect Jeff Adams for himself and his family, this energy-efficient house balances steep, panoramic views of meadow and oak woodland to the east, north, and west with appropriate southern orientation for passive solar design and daylighting. Located within a stunning creek watershed that cuts through the rolling hill topography of the lower Sierra Foothills, the compact design artfully merges the contemporary sensibilities of the architect/husband with the more traditional tastes of his wife (who grew up in a farmhouse in upstate New York). As a regionally appropriate departure point, the design adopts the rural, vernacular form of a two-story, gable-roofed barn.”

5. Family Farmhouse

Architect: Whitten Architects, Location: Brunswick, Maine

From the architect: “This new home couldn’t happen quickly enough for this high-energy, growing family. With three small children and active parents, this family was ready to build a home with room to grow and play. They desired an architecture that spoke to a ‘modern farmhouse.’ Our design solution sited the house on the northern portion of the furthest parcel from the main road, affording a sun pocket play yard to the south with views to the pond beyond. The long, winding driveway adds to the secluded feel of the property—one that feels distinctly Maine. Upon approach, one is greeted with a bold barn, which shelters the main house from cold northeasterly winds, and breaks the scale of the house proper. A large portal, a take on the porte-cochère, provides an inviting arrival. The portal offers a location for a car to unload little ones, or for kids and adults to stack their outdoor toys. It has access to both storage and a two-car garage.”
